Tile Roofing Institute Announces Installer Certification Program and Hosts Educational Seminar at IBS

CHICAGO—In an effort to expand best practices for the installation of tile roofing systems, the Tile Roofing Institute (TRI) will launch an installer training and certification program in early 2006. This will be the tile roofing industry’s first national certificate program, designed to educate roofing professionals on industry guidelines for tile roof installation in moderate climates. The program is also intended to raise awareness of tile roofing among contractors across the country.

TRI representatives will be available to discuss the new installer certification program, as well as the latest tile roofing installation guidelines for hurricane-prone areas, at the International Builder’s Show (IBS) in Orlando, January 11-14, at booth W2689, located in the Building Systems Council Pavilion (an area hosted by the National Association of Home Builders).

Additionally, TRI’s technical director Rick Olson, and Jerry Vandewater of MonierLifetile will be hosting an educational seminar at the show on January 14 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., entitled “Designing Roofs to Withstand Mother Nature.” The seminar will offer an in-depth look at the design of clay and concrete tile roof systems, and the benefits these systems provide in various climatic regions. A portion of the seminar will address the performance of tile roofs in hurricanes, as well as the recent updated installation guidelines for Florida.

After Florida’s relentless 2004 hurricane season, the tile roofing industry surveyed the damage to tile roofs and found one recurring problem. “Hip and ridge” tiles, those tiles that trim the edges of the roof, were likely to be missing or damaged. A survey of the damage from this year’s

Hurricane Wilma is consistent with 2004 observations. The cause of the hip and ridge tile problems was primarily due to improper installation. In response, TRI and the Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (FRSA) worked together to create an extensive set of guidelines for hip and ridge tile attachment. The new instructions, intended to strengthen and clarify current installation procedures, were officially adopted into the Florida Building Code November 1.
