Tile Roofing Industry Alliance Lobbyist, Craig Brightup, has provided the latest government relations update and activities on the following from August 2026:
Reconciliation 3.0 Before leaving for August, House Republicans passed a third budget reconciliation bill (3.0) to boost spending for the military and agriculture and with the SAVE America Act (voter ID) included. The Senate left in August without working on the bill and Senate Republicans might be incapable of passing Reconciliation 3.0. Government Funding In early August, the Senate passed a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government funded at current FY levels through Dec. 11 and the House approved the Senate CR on September 1. Tariffs New 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods went into effect on August 22. Imposed under the never-before used Sec. 338 of the Trade Act of 1930, the tariffs cover about 5% of Canadian imports into the U.S. ranging from wine to hockey sticks to cement. National Labor Relations Board On August 7, the Senate approved President Trump’s NLRB nominees, James Macy (R) and David Prouty (D). Macy gives Republicans a 3-1 majority allowing them to overturn Biden-era NLRB decisions. OSHA Heat Standard OSHA is rewriting its proposed and unworkable Heat Illness and Injury Prevention Standard for publication and comments by Dec. 26 to gain support for a “sensible” standard that could go into affect by October 2027. More Homes on the Market Act On August 18, Home Depot’s CFO said the company is operating in “frozen housing market conditions” with “lower housing turnover.” In this context, the More Homes on the Market Act, H.R. 1340/S. 3332, continues to generate support in Congress with 156 House cosponsors (91 Ds, 64 Rs) and 22 Senate cosponsors (17 Rs, 5 Ds).
