The TRI Alliance Government Relations Committee was in the Nation’s Capital April 15th – 18th, 2024 for meetings, in addition to the NRCA Roofing Day in D.C. events. The meetings were arranged by TRI Alliance D.C. Lobbyist Craig Brightup, and emphasized regulatory issues which are generating concern among TRIA members and the entire roofing industry.

The TRIA Team’s first meeting was on the morning of April 16th with Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), a member of the Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The HELP Committee has jurisdiction over the Dept. of Labor and subcabinet agencies like OSHA.

The one-page TRIA “OSHA-DOL Watch List” was used for the meeting with Sen. Marshall, who supports TRIA’s position on these issues and bills to stop anti-business regulations.

The next meeting was with Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) and her staff. Rep. Miller is on the Workforce Protections Subcommittee which covers OSHA, and has been alarmed by the draft Heat Injury and Illness Standard and its potential impact on businesses including her family’s farm.

The TRIA Team then met with Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) and his staff. John Campbell, Eagle Roofing Products, is a constituent of Mills, who has taken it upon himself to rescue stranded Americans in hotspots around the world. Mills also wants to stop bad regulations and cut agency budgets.

After that was a tour of the Speaker’s Suite. TRIA knew Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) before he became Speaker of the House, and his staff made it possible for the TRIA Team to visit the Speaker’s Suite in the U.S. Capitol Building and view the mall from the Speaker’s Balcony.

The evening of April 16 featured a reception at the Capitol Hill Club hosted by TRIA, the Construction Leadership Council and the Washington Industrial Roundtable. Key staff from the Senate HELP and House Education and Workforce Committees attended, and Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL) was the special guest.

TRIA’s schedule concluded on April 18th with a meeting at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), an annual fly-in tradition. NAHB is an industry partner and leads the Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC), which TRIA helped launch. Brad Mannion, NAHB’s Director of Labor, Health and Safety and CISC staff, was at the meeting with NAHB’s Legal Counsel Mackenzie Payne to review issues of mutual concern for both associations and exchange notes.
