The Tile Roofing Industry Alliance (TRIA) held a fly-in to Washington, D.C, from April 8 – 10, 2025, to meet with members of Congress and association allies concerning issues facing the tile roofing industry. Meetings began April 8 at a breakfast for Congressman Troy Nehls (R-TX) to discuss issues such as extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in the forthcoming reconciliation package. Next was a meeting with Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) to discuss President Trump’s nominees for the Labor Dept. and OSHA, and TRIA’s concerns with the proposed heat standard and current silica rule. Miller is on the Education and Workforce Committee and its Workforce Protections Subcommittee.
The TRIA team then met with Congressman Cory Mills (R-FL) where the conversation covered a number of topics including insurance issues, particularly in Florida. Following the Mills meeting was a Washington Industrial Roundtable (WIRT) luncheon featuring Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (R-VA). Kiggans thanked the TRI Alliance for sponsoring the lunch and the event was attended by 20 lobbyists from various industries in addition to the TRIA team. TRIA’s fly-in was held in conjunction NRCA’s Roofing Day in DC which focused on improving the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), and supporting construction visas in the Essential Workers for Economic Advancement Act. The TRIA team also voiced support for allowing qualified individuals who’ve been working legally in Temporary Protected Status or Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs to adjust to permanent resident status. The afternoon of April 8, TRIA’s team met with the Legislative Assistant for Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), who sits on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. The TRIA team expressed its appreciation for Marshall’s support for WIOA and other workforce bills, as well as regulatory reform legislation. The final meeting on April 8 was an event for House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN). The TRI Alliance thanks legal advisor Trent Cotney for making TRIA’s participation possible through his law firm, Adams and Reese. April 9 was devoted to Roofing Day functions including an invitation-only meeting at the Dept. of Labor with its Cabinet member, Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. NRCA arranged the meeting for Roofing Day attendees from Oregon (Chavez-DeRemer’s home state) and NRCA officers. Chavez-DeRemer plans to visit all 50 states to meet with various industries and TRIA will look to have her tour a roof tile manufacturing facility and a jobsite where possible. April 10 was the last day of TRIA’s DC Fly-In with a meeting at the National Association of Home Builders and its top advocacy staff: Mackenzie Payne (Legal), Sam Gilboard (Safety, Workforce, Immigration), and JP Delmore (Tax Policy). Many mutual issues were discussed including President Trump’s appointments to DOL and OSHA, building codes, and building energy-efficiency tax credits in the reconciliation bill that Republicans are drafting. Also discussed was the highly effective Construction Industry Safety Coalition which NAHB coordinates and to which TRIA belongs.
The TRI Alliance is grateful to those who participated in the 2025 Fly-In to Washington, DC. It boosts TRIA’s visibility and clout on Capitol Hill and enhances TRIA’s mission to be a voice in Washington for the industry. Great to see TRIA actively engaging with Congress on key industry issues like labor regulations, workforce development, and tax policies. Their advocacy helps ensure that tile roofing gets the attention it deserves in Washington, especially around safety standards and workforce support. Strong industry voices like TRIA make a real difference!
